Sensory education is one of the cornerstones of the Montessori method, which takes advantage of children’s interest in exploration and the ease of perceiving details, between three and six years of age
“The education of the senses should begin methodically in childhood and continue during the period of instruction that should prepare the individual for Practical Life in the environment.”.
Beyond stimulating the different Sensory channels, the materials designed by Dr. Montessori offer the possibility of organizing information and favouring Cognitive development through classification and serialization.
Among the characteristics of these materials stand out self-correction and introducing abstract concepts to the child through concrete experiences.
Through working with this area, children also prepare for further learning related to Mathematics and Geometry and develop some necessary reading and writing skills, in the words of Dr. Montessori:
“Sensory development precedes that of a higher intellectual activity”.
To know some theoretical foundations related to Sensory education in Montessori pedagogy.
Identify the general purposes and characteristics of this area.
Know the indirect preparation to other areas that are achieved through Sensorial materials.
Identify exercise groups through Sensorial materials.
Know some representative materials of each group of activities..

Contemporary experts in human development underline the relationship between Sensory development and Cognitive development during the first years of life and validate Montessori’s position on the importance of education for the senses.
