Art is a very naturalized expressive language in school, which is often limited to isolated, unsystematic or technical experiences and says little about the expressive flow of the child from 0 to 3 years old.
From the Montessori perspective, the artistic experience has a particular focus, because it focuses on the child’s ability to absorb any stimulus that he perceives in the prepared environment that we can offer him, addressing artistic expression from different aspects in each of the languages.
Dr. Montessori is based on the American philosopher John Dewey and his publication Art as Experience (1934) in which he expresses the foundations of Art as an everyday experience. For Dewey, Art is not an experience far from day to day, alien to everyday life.
Dewey supports Art as “a quality of doing”, a concept that Dr. Montessori shares from the concept of activity: we offer the child “motives for activity“, occasions for expression, situations or experiences through artistic parameters.
“For the young child, life is Art and Art is life,” says Murray Shafer, a Canadian music educator. Is that the child from 0 to 3 years does not separate between the aesthetic experience and their eating, hygiene and sleep habits.
The Role of the Adult in this process is of fundamental importance, and just as we take care of the level of intervention of the adult in other areas of education, we do not teach art, but we design motifs of artistic expression and express ourselves together with the child.
The sensitive period of the child from 0 to 3 years old crosses interests, needs and learning. They are many and occur in a very short time: movement, language development and the apprehension of objects through their senses. The proposals for expression that we offer you must respond to these needs.
We will see in this course that each language – Music and Visual Arts – has its own codes for expression. For example, color, texture, shape in Visual Arts, and height, timbre and intensity in Musical Expression. We will offer the child situations of activity and exploration of these language codes.
Artistic expression is for the child from 0 to 3 years a joyous, free and daily experience; discovering channels in the environment to offer situations that cover different codes of artistic languages is a necessity for the child because it allows them to have a tool to express, explore and develop their intelligence.
Art, for the young child, is a life experience.
Artistic expression is an invitation to rediscover the potentialities of the young child and to relate to him through non-verbal codes, valuing the capacities of genuine expression far from stereotypes.
