    PRESENTATION

Master’s degree in Montessori Pedagogy for the Elementary stage, taught by the International Montessori Institute (IMI) in collaboration with the University of Barcelona (UB).

Dr Maria Montessori brought forth through her method a pedagogical approach endorsed by the scientific community and worldwide recognised. The objective of this pedagogy is to educate human beings as unique people with training to act with freedom, intelligence and dignity.

Montessori education is a pedagogical approach of wide recognition at international level; Dr María Montessori developed during the first half of the twentieth century an educational method based on the scientific observation of children: their various stages of development throughout life, their potential, their interests and their capabilities.

Current scientific research continues to validate her educational method every day as a set of elements that help our children and students in their holistic development of mind, body and emotions.

This Master’s degree taught from a classical Montessori perspective, offers comprehensive training, providing an adequate scientific, philosophical and methodological basis. Training the student to become a Montessori Guide in stages 6-9 and 9-12 years, with the aim of contributing, with a global pedagogical approach, to the quality of children’s education

MONTESSORI MASTER’S ONLINE DEGREE – ELEMENTARY SPECIALTY

About childhood: what the brain like at this stage and how it learns

Beginning at age of 6, the intellectual development accelerates. Although in childhood it was necessary to know through the senses, at the age of 6 the child begins to develop his capacity for abstraction, which María Montessori relates to the power of imagination: the capacity of the human being that allows him to create culture and technology , which helps you to relate and serve others

Children’s reasoning minds make them focus on the why of things, establish cause-effect relationships, and identify patterns. Therefore, it is the propitious moment to offer them multiple options of knowledge, where the relationships between the different areas are seen. In this way, each one deepens based on their own interest. Curiously, one of the pedagogical resources most used in Montessori Schools at this age is the metaphor, since the exercise of interpreting and comparing to understand represents another advance on an intellectual level.

It also greatly increases the ability to thought. That is, while the little ones live in the here and now, the children of primary school are able to ask themselves the same questions of the great philosophers: who am I? Where I come from? How was the world created? These natural concerns, according to its creator, are a fertile space to promote awareness of the human being in his relationship with life in any of its manifestations.

After 6 years old, he also begins to develop his moral sense: he distinguishes the good, the just, the correct; sometimes he is more interested in everyone following the rules of a game than in the game itself.

Before and after 9 years, the difference lies in its power of abstraction. That is, while between 6 and 8 years they need to manipulate the object -material- for a long time, to achieve symbolic representation and then elaborate the concept, between 9 and 12 years old – high primary-, it is only used the material at the time of explanation and there is much more work with notebooks and books.

Another aspect of development that notably influences behavior also occurs in upper elementary school: the onset of puberty. In this stage, hormonal activation reduces their ability to concentrate, they lose interest in consciousness and they begin to need long periods of sleep. A little later, when entering adolescence fully, the brain does a kind of pruning, to establish other neural connections.

    SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

    STUDY PLAN

    • Historical Context: History and life of Dr. Maria Montessori: The fascinating story of Dr. Montessori and her educational method which quickly took hold across the world.

    • The Role of the adult: The adult in relation to the child, the importance of observing and caring for relationships.
    • Prepared environment: As an educational element, its adequacy and management.
    • Scientific validations: From Montessori pedagogy from psychology to Neuroscience.
    • Observation techniques: Montessori Education has been developed from the scientific observation of children’s nature. The importance of training this skill on which classroom management is based in a Montessori prepared environment.
    • Geometry: the geometry materials allow the child to build patterns, which are decisive for his reasoning mind.
    • Language: Language is the backbone of community life and learning. Oral language plays an essential role in Montessori environments from the beginning and, little by little, literacy is introduced naturally and spontaneously.
    • Mathematics: Dr Montessori collects the concept of the “mathematical mind” of Blaise Pascal and transforms it into a didactic reality. Concrete materials that accompany the natural process of the mind towards mathematical abstraction. All the Activities necessary to offer a solid mathematical base for children.
    • Cosmic: Dr. Montessori was aware of the relationship between life and the environment, which speaks of the cosmic tasks of each element in nature. Each one, by the simple fact of existing, performs a task, maintaining the balance that has evolved through the ages. In this area we will cover the subjects of History, Geography and Biology.
