Montessori teacher, also known as the Guide, observe each child, their needs, capabilities, and interests and offers them opportunities of intelligent work with a specific aim and activities of taking care for themselves and the small community of the classroom. Guide’s final objective is to intervene less and less as the child develops. Montessori Guide allows them to act, chose and think for themselves, helping them to develop confidence and inner discipline. They do not give rewards or punishments, satisfaction is internal and it comes from the personal work of the child.
When children, depending on their evolutionary development, are ready for a lesson, the Guide introduces new materials and presents activities individually or in small groups. In more advanced age groups, at the start of the week, each child creates a list of objectives and then manages their time during the week so as to fulfill them. It is not the Guide but rather children who are responsible for their own learning and development.
