PROGRAMME
Historical context
The historical context of Dr. Maria Montessori, her life, her work and the relationship of education during the time she lived with education today. We will analyze if current education solves what adolescents really need.
In the same way we will study her theory on the evolutionary development of the child through the 4 planes of development through 2 schemes presented:
- The Geometric and the Bulb. Likewise, we will make an introduction to the book “From childhood to adolescence”, the basis for understanding the Montessori program for adolescents.
Prepared Environment
The meaning of the Prepared Environment according to the Maria Montessori’s approach, its physical and mental characteristics for each of the levels of development.
We will delve into the role of the adult within the prepared environment to understand the concept of Pedagogy of Space, that is, how in the third level of development the prepared environment can extend beyond the physical school.
The four planes of development, an overview
We will get an overview of each of the planes of development, understanding the physical, social and emotional characteristics as well as the needs of children at each stage:
- First Level: 0 to 6 years
- Second Level: 6 to 12 years
We will also address what Dr. Montessori defined as Cosmic Education, a fundamental area in primary school programme and a key antecedent for the secondary one.
The third plane of development: Adolescence
The third plane of development, corresponding to adolescence. We will delve into the first sub plane that covers the ages from 12 to 15 years.
We will first understand the physical, social and emotional characteristics of teenagers; then we will understand how their brain works, followed by studying what are the fundamental needs of children at this stage and finally, we will study in detail how an environment is prepared to meet the characteristics and needs of this plane of development.
Introduction to the Montessori Work Plan for Adolescents
Read and analyze in depth the appendix A and B of the book written by Dr. Montessori: “From Childhood to Adolescence” establishing the bases for the Montessori educational approach in the third plane.
In the same way, we will delve into each of the parts of the study program such as the Social Organisation and the Montessori school programme for Adolescents. Finally, we will understand how to formulate an academic plan based on the three period lesson proposed by Dr Maria Montessori.
Development of the Work Plan and Studies
We will know and understand two central areas of the work plan:
- Activities: practical projects that relate the student to the understanding of the natural world and the use of resources.
- Humanities: the study of humanity, history and language.
We guide students to develop a final project for implementation in their workplaces.
Practical considerations to implement a Montessori program for Adolescents
A space to understand how to break the paradigm of adolescence. We will address the importance of the development of expression, grace and courtesy as well as social characteristic behaviours at this age.
We share with the students some practical issues for the implementation of their programmes and their final project will be reviewed.
